Purpose and diabetes

by Douglas Zale, M.D.

A purpose is important for the control of diabetes. Diabetics have to have a reason, a purpose, to make changes and improve.

Purpose involves being mindful of your diabetes. Practice mindfulness in all that you do. What is mindfulness? It’s simply being conscious of what you’re doing. Concentrating! Mindfulness can help you control your diabetes by keeping you conscious of it. In order to control anything, a car, a pet, your life, your diabetes, you have to concentrate.

Your purpose has to be top of mind.

Your purpose for your diabetes is to increase the control of your blood sugar. Don’t grab a handful of chips or cookies when you’re hungry! Think about what you should be eating instead. Keep your diabetes diagnosis at the top of your mind. Make the right choices with food and exercise. This thought process helps to keep you on track.

Mindfulness helps when trying to cut back on desires. If you want to smoke, smoke great cigarettes, cigars, pot, or whatever. Make it the best and savor the time so you enjoy it. Don’t suck the cigarette down and move on to the next one! Now I’m not advocating for smoking, but I’m advocating that a way to cut back is to enjoy it. If you’re going to smoke and millions of people are, do it less but enjoy it more

Savoring is a form of mindfulness to help your diabetes.

This savoring helps you to get satisfied with less. The same goes for food or drink. To cut back, do it less but really enjoy it when you do. Be conscious of what you’re doing, not mindless. Do it so that you get the most enjoyment from the activity and you are satisfied with less. Don’t bring home a six-pack of swill and mindlessly chug it down. Buy better beer or try wine or bourbon, etc., and savor every sip. Don’t gobble down a handful of cookies or chips. Eat one at a time and enjoy it. By savoring, and being mindful, you eat less and get control of your diabetes easier.

Spend a little more on something good and enjoy every sip or bite or draw consciously. This mindfulness can help your diabetes by causing you to slowly cut back on the bad activity for your physical health while it improves your mental health by taking you away from the problems of the day. The slow savoring also tricks the brain. It takes you away from the idea that you’re missing out or “not getting yours”.

Purpose and mindfulness help you to think less about your diabetes

Mindfulness and purpose bring you inward to a place of relaxation and peace. It puts you in control instead of the monkey brain in all of us, constantly looking for a reward. Take control of your desires instead of letting them control you. Do yourself a favor and use mindfulness to get your diabetes under control by consciously controlling your desires.
